A LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

Discover Niagara
EVERY SUMMER, I look forward to rediscovering Niagara. I’ve lived here for years, but there’s something special about hopping on my bike or getting my hiking gear and heading out, looking for exercise and adventure. And every time, I’m reminded — this region is full of surprises.
One of my go-to stops is Balls Falls Conservation Area in Lincoln. I’ve been there countless times, both hiking and on my bike, but somehow it always feels different. Maybe it’s the way the waterfalls change with the seasons, or perhaps it’s the quiet magic of walking through the old village. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down and appreciate where you are.
Then there’s Grimsby Beach, with its brightly painted cottages that feel like something out of a storybook. Jo-Anne and I love walking through that neighbourhood down to the water with our grandkids — there’s something about the unexpected burst of colour along the lake that never fails to make people smile.
Short Hills Provincial Park is a local classic, and for good reason — the trails are gorgeous, and there’s always a new route to explore. And after a long walk, our priority is usually to get the dog home for a bath (which is definitely not his highlight of the day).
Golf is another of my favourite pastimes in the summer, and Niagara offers some of the finest courses in the province. My buddies and I have a weekly game at the Niagara Parks courses — Battlefield, Ussher’s Creek or Whirlpool. While our games are not that impressive, the courses and hospitality offered there always make us feel like pros.
So, here’s my challenge to you this summer: Take a day (or a weekend) and see Niagara like a traveller would. Follow the back roads, stop at the places you’ve never noticed before, and let yourself be surprised. Sometimes, the best adventures are the ones closest to home. Don’t forget your CAA card. CAA
