Setting the Pace
Colin Strickland runs on a full tank of positivity.
By Dick Snyder
COLIN STRICKLAND HAS A LOT OF TATTOOS. But it’s the words inked on the heel of each hand that reveal what he’s all about: the word “only” on one hand, and “love” on the other. It’s a strong statement, reflecting his commitment to his community and all the people who find themselves in his orbit.
Strickland, a teacher in his hometown of St. Catharines, takes volunteering to new heights.
In 2024, he received the T. Roy Adams Humanitarian Award in recognition of his decades of volunteerism and community service in the Niagara region. “Nobody sets out to volunteer in order to get an award,” he says. “It’s my belief that little things matter. Especially in the world right now, it’s easy to feel we’re drowning in negativity.”
His solution is to encourage everyone, especially marginalized and vulnerable individuals, to do what humans do best: gather as a community and support each other. In 2019, he started the Corners Run Crew — a positive and inclusive space for people of all abilities to gather for a run — or walk, no judgment. It began with a handful of runners, but now dozens show up three times a week. On Instagram, @thecornersruncrew has more than 6,500 followers. Visit the profile and you’ll be greeted with: “You’ve already made this team.”
In addition to providing a vehicle for social interaction, physical activity, and occasionally fundraising for local charities, the Crew supports local businesses by gathering at a different café, snack shack or similar independent operation for each meet. Some folks don’t even run — they just come to be surrounded by other people. And that’s okay, too. As Strickland likes to say: “Moderate pace, positive space.”
It’s a mantra that keeps him running.

What Songs Do You Road-Trip to, Tim Hicks?
TIM HICKS HAS 215 MILLION GLOBAL STREAMS, a truckload of smash singles and multiple marquee awards to his credit. So, it’s easy to forget that he has ascended by vividly chronicling country music’s everyman. Then again, maybe that’s why his music has resonated globally. But the Niagara Falls-born, St. Catharines-reared musician is a Canuck at heart. “I’ve always been a huge fan of Canadian music,” he says, “and with everything going on in the world today, that love has reached a new level. I love a good summer road trip, especially when you get off the main highway, roll down the windows, and crank the tunes up to sing-along volume.” Canada, you have your soundtrack! –Kim Hughes
