Les Incompetents, St. Catharines
Enjoy wine, spirits and what they call a “French(ish)” menu from the folks who created Fat Rabbit, a local foodie favourite. Don’t be fooled by the name — this new bar features a highly competent staff led by chef Zach Smith, also of Bar Raval and Matty Matheson’s Meat & Three. The name references a line in the movie Home Alone in which a character tells Kevin, “You’re what the French call les incompetents.” All because it’s Smith’s first time cooking French food. Are we worried? Mais non!

RADAR | THE END OF THE ROAD
Marcy’s Woods
Venture out beyond the end of the road on a tour of this private nature reserve on Lake Erie’s north shore, just 30 minutes south of Welland. Known as one of the most unique ecological areas in the country, this 115-hectare natural gem is largely made up of intact Carolinian forest, which makes up only one percent of Canada’s land mass. It’s home to a large population of mammals, birds and reptiles, some of which are at risk. Residents include the eastern redback salamander, northern leopard frog, bullfrog, opossum, gray fox and the Woodhouse's toad. Due to the site’s protected status, visitors gain access by contacting the reserve at marcyswoods.ca and completing the request form, which includes available dates and guided tour information.

Smoke and Moonshine Authentic Barbeque’s Smashburger
It’s getting cooler outside, but the Smashburger at Smoke and Moonshine Authentic Barbeque brings the heat all year round. Two four-ounce seasoned chuck patties with a caramelized crust are layered with cool coleslaw and tangy pickles. A generous slather of creamy Alabama white sauce unites this flavour explosion, all nestled in a sesame-seed baked bun. It’s a messy and thoroughly satisfying dive into barbeque bliss. CAA Members save 10% on regularly priced menu items when dining in at Smoke and Moonshine Authentic Barbeque.
