Smart tips for stress-free packing, whether you’re chasing the sun or heading into the snow.

PACKING SHOULD BE EXCITING — it’s the final step before your next big adventure. But in reality, it can be stressful. Check a bag or keep it simple by just taking a carry-on? Sweats or sequins? How do you make room for souvenirs without leaving the essentials behind? And what exactly counts as an essential, anyway?

There’s nothing like being prepared for any situation — but bringing it all may not be realistic. Overweight luggage can come at a significant expense, as does adding a second checked bag to your flight. It may be easier to purchase some things, should you need them, rather than taking along the just-in-case pieces. Start with a plan including the following when packing for your next trip:

Weather watch

It sounds simple, but knowing the forecast for your destination makes packing a lot easier. A sun destination may have cool nights, while a temperate destination might be unseasonably warm. Don’t want to pack rain boots, but expecting some damp days? Get silicone covers for your kicks. Bring a compact umbrella, a shell (like a K-Way or windbreaker) and a versatile cashmere blanket scarf that can double for cozy comfort on a chilly train. Think layers so that you can easily adjust to the temperature.

Versatility

Choose clothing you can wear more than once, ideally in different ways. A sarong can be a skirt, a shawl or a bathing suit cover-up. A vest can be a layering piece or a shirt on its own. Pick a colour palette that you can mix and match. You might also want to pack a travel-size laundry detergent or a few stain wipes in case you need to freshen up during your stay.

Spill-free

Each of your toiletries should be separated into its own container so that if one should leak, it won’t damage anything else around it. Sandwich bags with zip closures will help save the day from leaks — you don’t want your vitamins tasting like cologne, and you certainly don’t want your makeup brushes covered in toothpaste. If you travel with your signature scent, fill a small travel atomizer instead of tempting the fates with the entire bottle.
