Stoke Deli Bar
Fonthill, Ont.
Stoke is a deli for the modern era. And as most folks in Pelham, Ont., likely know, it has also become one of Niagara’s most desirable pantry shops. Chef Jess Marshall and her wife Cait Bermuhler — who was born and raised in Pelham — first met while working in the U.K., then spent a decade travelling the world before moving to the Niagara region. They opened their first restaurant — a pop-up in St. Catharines in 2018 — followed by a very successful stint inside De La Terre Bakery in the same city. The couple, who make their own bread, pickles and condiments in-house and work with local farmers to source fresh seasonal ingredients, moved into the current brick-and-mortar location in Fonthill in late 2024. Stoke Deli Bar is now home to their delicious fare — including their line of hot sauces, pickles and pantry staples, called Stoke at Home — at the corner of Highway 20 and Pelham St. Expect more than just lunch; sandwiches such as the chicken shawarma — stacked with chili aioli, pickles, organic greens and pepperoncini — have turned this duo from global travellers into local culinary icons. –Sean Deasy

With its elevated viewing platform, Lock 8 in Port Colborne is a great place from which to observe these massive freighters. To get there, set out from St. Catharines and explore a few of the region’s many attractions. –Dick Snyder

Southern Fried Chicken Melt and Spicy Nashville Chicken Sandwiches
Meltwich Food Co.
As spring begins to thaw Niagara, one local restaurant chain is already bringing the heat indoors. Meltwich Food Co. elevates comfort food with a bold, crave-worthy menu that’s a must for cheese lovers, led by two standout sandwiches that steal the spotlight. The Southern Fried Chicken Melt layers crispy chicken with a rich blend of American and cheddar cheeses, topped with signature melt sauce and finished with pickles, tomato-corn salsa and fresh lettuce. (A plant-based option is also available.) For those who like it hot, the Spicy Nashville Chicken delivers serious flavour, combining crispy chicken with creamy American cheese, coleslaw, pickles, jalapenos, Nashville sauce and buttermilk dill sauce — where bold heat meets a cool, refreshing contrast. Visit a location in Thorold, St. Catharines or Niagara Falls and get ready for a mouthwatering meltdown. –Sean Deasy
